Placenamesni.orgthe history behind our place-names

Aghnahoe, County Tyrone

Origin

Achadh na hUamha ‘field of the cave’

Background

The cave may have been natural, or a souterrain, but these features are often filled in or hidden from view.  The townland of Mullanahoe in Arboe (Cookstown LGD) still contains a fine souterrain, but here there is now no record of a cave (not on 1;10,000 sh. 178, nor SMR. Mullanahoe illus. UJA iv (1897-8) 65-6).
